Today I get to tell you all about a lovely indie book I read with my mum and sisters! Oh, and if you’re interested, I also reviewed a book by Maggie’s brother a while ago that you can see here.

First of all, I really, really enjoyed this book! Though I have to admit at the start it was a little slow and there were different things that Ellen, the main character, did that made me frustrated. But part way through, things really got interesting and there were lots of loveable characters to cheer for. By the end, I was sad to finish and wishing there was another book just like it to read.

Before I share any more of my thoughts though, here’s the synopsis, so you can know what I’m talking about 😀

The Star Under the City

Author: Maggie Joy
Genre: Christian historical fiction
Page Count: 320 pages
Series: N/A (stand-alone novel)
Synopsis:

When Ellen is suddenly orphaned and dropped alone into a strange city under tight Nazi control, she struggles to survive from day to day.

Her life takes an unexpected turn when she finds a mysterious, metal six-point star that is slightly different from the ‘Star of David’ all Jews are forced to wear.

Not only does the star feel like a sign of hope, but it sets her on a mission to find out what it really means. As she begins to wonder if she’ll ever find answers, she meets Lenz, and her life is flung into a whirlwind of danger and hardship, new friends and new enemies, and opportunities to learn trust and true sacrifice.

As she attempts to find her place in the conflict, she discovers she is a part of something so much bigger than she could ever imagine.

About the Author:

I’m maggie. or mags. or midge. or whatever 😛
i love rainstorms, walks to the park on summer nights,
hoodies, songs that really capture stuff, singing in echoy places, sunflowers, playing guitar, unexpected connections with strangers, food, talking with people about things they care about,
oh and of course, writing. 🙂

My Thoughts:

Despite the initial chapters feeling a little slow and repetitive, by the end I was thoroughly involved with each of the characters and wanting more!

I love reading stories (whether fiction or non-fiction) set in WWII and this book was no exception. I appreciated the author’s heart for Jewish people and also the fact that this book approached the war from a different angle than other books I’ve read–through the eyes of a non-Jewish girl who is hurting, alone, and wants to make sense of her relationship with God. Through a strange series of events, she winds up involved with a resistance group, which teaches her a lot about herself, others, and God.

I think my favourite characters were Ellen, Lenz, Tytus, Willie, Darek, and Mr Jashel–okay as you can see there were a lot of very loveable characters! And Maggie did a great job of making you care about each of them and giving them lots of individual characteristics and back story! There is a healthy dose of intrigue and mystery that keeps you wondering exactly how it’s all going to work out. It was definitely a book that made me want to keep reading! And some parts may or may not have made me tear up. 😉

I would gladly hand this book to readers of all ages as there was nothing inappropriate and only very light romance (if you could even call it that– it was more just that two characters were engaged!). I’m not a fan of romance, and I had no issues with this book.

Some Quotes:

“Think of this, Ellen, without the dark, we would never see the stars.“

Finally, I whispered, “Come on, Lenz,” I took his hand, “God is holding out the strength you need. Keep fighting, Lenz.”

In summary this book is well-worth reading (and I hope to read it again!). It’s full of loveable characters who have a lot depth, a good dose of action, heartache, mystery, characters learning to trust God, and a plot that pulls you in.

Now what are you waiting for?! Go grab your copy and add this great book to your Goodreads shelf!! 😉

Today I have the privilege of sharing about Ryana Peterson’s new prolife book!

I’ll admit that I was meant to share my thoughts about To Save a Life in this post, but I haven’t finished reading it yet. Sooo . . . I’m afraid you’ll just have to wait a little longer for my review! 😉 But it is coming, and it also means that now I get to do an extra pro-life post. 😀 So consider this post a bonus!!

And now, here is the beautiful cover of To Save a Life!! I don’t know about you, but I love it!

Title: To Save a Life
Series: Book #1 of Natty’s Warriors
Author: R.M. Peterson
Release Date: November 6, 2021

Book Synopsis:

To Save a Life tells the story of two young couples: one with big questions and one with the answers they need. When a baby is born alive after a botched abortion, the parents are faced with questions they have never considered. This story follows their journey to the answers they need regarding Christ, the value of Life, and what they must do to turn their lives around.

Genre: contemporary pro-life novel

Content: mildly detailed medical sequences (no gory details, but mentions blood), abortion mentioned and explained, unmarried couple have a child, but no details prior to the baby being born, mild descriptions of hemophilia and miscarriage (mostly just mentioning that a character has them).

Right now my sisters and I are reading a review copy of TSAL together, and I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to be reading this special book. Ryana has written loveable (and not so loveable characters), and I’m interested to find out how the rest of the story will unfold. So far this book has made me stop and think more about what it might be like to be involved in an abortion from many different angles–the mother and father, family, abortion clinic workers . . .

I’m also thankful for the reminder of all the brokenness that results from what we call “abortion.” Having these precious lives brought to mind through this story makes it all seem more real and vivid. Hopefully I’ll be less likely to forget or just dismiss these hurting lives from my mind . I pray that God will use this book to awaken many people and that they would remember to pray and be warriors for both the unborn and the broken lives that result from every facet of abortion.

And what a blessing to be reminded that despite any of our mistakes–no matter how awful they may be–and despite our brokenness, we have hope in God!

🎵 There is peace in Christ
When we learn of Him
Feel the love He felt for us
When He bore our sins

Listen to His words
Let them come alive
If we know Him as He is
There is peace in Christ

He gives us hope
When hope is gone
He give us strength
When we can’t go on
He give us shelter
In the storms of life
When there’s no peace on Earth
There is peace in Christ
🎵

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

John 14:27

Page Count: 251 pages
Release Date: October 21, 2021

Book Synopsis:

Suffering suffocates her soul.

How can she ever smile again?

A helpless newborn…that’s exactly how twenty-four-year-old Liliora Ellith feels in her efforts to speak up on behalf of the youngest members of Taerna’s pleasure-driven society. Her tender heart for the defenseless and deep aversion to conflict throw Liliora’s soul into turmoil when tragedy opens her eyes to the quiet yet heartrending war on Taerna’s babies—both born and unborn. Adon Olam’s Word coupled with a secret in her own past fuel her determination. All she wants is to make peace with her past and discover her future among the cradles of unwanted babies. However, the challenges ahead of her threaten to send her spiraling into hopeless depression time and again. Saving innocent lives from the crush of the destroyer and raising a generation in the ways of Adon Olam seem more impossible than ever. At the very end of herself, will the sufferings of her and her babies prove to be anything less than the catalyst for complete disaster?

Genre: clean kingdom adventure fiction, recommended for fourteen and up due to addressing the topic of abortion

Content: no magic, romance, or language. Abortion is mentioned or thought about by characters but happens entirely off-page. There are a few unwed mothers but it isn’t condoned.

And now for the fun interview I mentioned! 😀

Author Interview with Erika Matthews

Welcome to my blog, Erika! I’m so glad that you agreed to do an author interview with me! 😀 I always love finding out more about author’s lives and writing. So let’s dive in!

Have you always enjoyed writing? If not, what made you get started?

I started writing stories and poems when I was five years old, and I never stopped, so I must have always enjoyed it. Writing followed reading quickly for me. I have continued and increased my writing due to God’s call on my life, which I’ve known since I was thirteen. My desire is to encourage people into a more intimate relationship with God.

Sounds like you’ve always been a writer at heart then! 😉 What is your favourite genre to read?

I especially enjoy reading Christian vintage fiction: those historical fiction novels that were contemporary when they were written but old now. Those writers who wrote about times foreign to us today were immersed in that culture and as a result produce flavorful, charming, and edifying books.

It’s fun to think that such books were once contemporary to their time period! 🙂 Now on a more serious note: What do you hope readers will draw from Sustainer’s Smile?

Sustainer’s Smile was written as my own heart-cry to God for those who are too small and defenseless to speak up for themselves. Through telling Liliora’s story, I yearn to bring to the forefront of the mind the horrors of treating the unborn as valueless and kindle the desire to pray fervently for them. I pray that through this book, you as a reader might find God’s hand in whatever struggles you are facing. My prayer is that you as a reader discover that He is indeed carrying you. Even when your trials seem pointless and purposeless, too intense to accept or move past, may He prove to be your sustainer, and may He grant that you too find the smile in the storm.

It’s so lovely to hear what your heart behind the writing of this book is. And I agree that we all need to keep these little lives in our thoughts more (and pray for them!).

I’m curious! Do you have a favourite non-book related hobby?

I love doing anything outdoors! Hiking, swimming, and enjoying nature (the beach, mountains, views, landscapes, autumn trees, summer warmth, spring breezes, sunrises, sunsets) are a few of my favourite outdoor activities.

That’s so beautifully put! I love being out in God’s creation myself and all those things sound delightful! Now I want to find out a bit more about your series! How many books are you planning for it?

Truth from Taerna is a six-book series born from a heart to communicate the truths of God’s kingdom—the spiritual realm hidden from our physical senses—in an engaging story format. Each book can be read as a standalone, and each one focuses on an aspect of spiritual truth that today’s church often downplays. My desire is to demonstrate how the powerful, life-changing truths of God’s kingdom could play out in a fictional setting.

I plan to release the final two books in the series (Memory’s Mind and Romance’s Rest) in 2022. I also have a short story collection in the works (newsletter subscribers will receive it free as soon as it’s available – restinglife.com/signup) and ideas for a companion novella bouncing around in my head…

Wow! A six book series will be quite the achievement! 😀 And I love the covers by the way. They look so lovely together, and I can’t way to see the next two. I think Sustainer’s Smile is my favourite so far–I love the green colour and the way the trees frame the mother and baby!

Talking about favourites, what is a favourite character or book that you’ve written so far?

“Favourite” is a subjective word. 🙂 Promise’s Prayer was my first novel; Victory’s Voice is the one I get most excited about when I reread it – but Sustainer’s Smile is probably the book that is nearest to my heart. What’s more, I enjoyed writing Liliora Ellith. She is very similar to me in many ways. She processes hurt similarly; she has a heart similar to mine, and while there are many differences, she’s a very relatable character.

I knew that would likely be tricky question, but I like how you answered it! 😉 I think an author’s first novel will always hold a special place in their heart, and it’s interesting hearing why the other’s have special places too.

To finish off, do you have a Scripture verse that was special to you while writing Sustainer’s Smile?

Yes. The theme verse for Sustainer’s Smile is Proverbs 31:8-9: “Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.”

I also love Isaiah 46:3-4 for this book: “Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb: And even to your old age I am He; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.”

Thank you so much for all you’ve shared! It’s been such a pleasure to have you on my blog today. 😀 And a big congratulations on your newest release! Keep writing to honour God!

This month I have the honour of participating in a pro-life blog tour co-hosted by authors Erika Matthews and Ryana Lynn (Miller) Peterson. So today, I have a pro-life post for you! And later in the month, I’ll be sharing info on their new pro-life novels (as well a fun author interview and a book review). So stay tuned! 😀

But for now, I want to raise my voice for the unborn.

As I was thinking about doing this post, I felt a little unsure how to begin. After all, it’s such a huge and important issue–but what exactly should I say? So I’m going to start by saying this:

I hate abortion because it dishonours God and because of the terrible consequences for the mother and unborn child. With abortion, there’s always more than one victim. 🙁

“So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.”

Genesis 1:27

Unfortunately, it’s also so easy to become complacent–even if we hate abortion. It’s easy not to want to think about how many lives are snuffed out by abortion. To get used to it. To forget about it. Or to think there’s nothing we can do.

But I don’t think any of those things are good enough reasons/excuses to turn a blind eye.

At the same time, I have to admit that even as I’m writing this post, it still does seem hard to make a difference.

What can we do to save these precious lives?

But perhaps the first step is as “simple” as remembering to pray for mothers who find themselves in difficult situations. For the staff at Planned Parenthood (because people can and do change!). For people who have a survived. For the mothers who’ve had an abortion–that they would repent and have the courage to speak out. And for the tiny unborn babies themselves who are so vulnerable and undervalued.

We can’t put a stop to all the abortions. But perhaps we can make a difference in one life or situation. And every life counts.

We don’t have the right to choose when a life counts as a life.

Every life has God-given potential! Every life is precious no matter the circumstances! So be courageous and choose life!

“For Thou hast possessed my reins: Thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are Thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” Psalm 139:13-14

I think it would be remiss of me to finish this post without mentioning forgiveness. 🙂

“Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with Him is plenteous redemption.” Psalm 130:7

While this verse specifically mentions Israel–God is the same yesterday, today, and forever! We can find rest in knowing that with the LORD there is mercy and plenteous redemption.

May God give us each the strength to love and show God’s mercy to others–and to trust in God’s forgiveness.

Today we have the grand finale! We’re posting our Top 5 reads (so far!) from 2021!! So you’ll want to check some of these out for sure!

Phew!! It’s been quite the week of books, hasn’t it!! And we’re not quite finished yet! I’ve just been dusting brilliantly coloured Autumn leaves off some benches. So take a seat, if you’d like. Or if you’re feel energetic, how about jumping in some piles of leaves before diving into another book?! I have the strange feeling this is going to end in a giant leaf fight! 😛 But what better way to end the party!?

I’m quite excited to be sharing some of my favourite reads for the year with you today! So let’s dive in! 😀

Five Fall Favourites Day 6: Top Five for 2021!

Betrayed! By Stan Telchin

Betrayed! is the page-turning account of a loving Jewish family caught on divergent prongs of a historic conflict. When Stan Telchin’s daughter accepts Jesus as her Messiah, she makes a touching plea for him to search out the truth for himself. Intending to prove her wrong, Telchin sets out on a vigorous and critical examination of the claims of Jesus Christ. He is astonished at what he learns and finds himself facing a wrenching and life-changing decision.
As readers travel with Telchin, they too will discover a deeper, fuller awareness of both Judaism and Christianity, as well as how God can heal wounds from the bitterest conflicts. Even more, readers will discover the inexorable power of the gospel. This new edition includes an update from the author and wisdom-filled words on Jewish identity.

I love the Jewish people, and I hope and pray that many more find Messiah like the family in this book. Reading this story was so interesting and worthwhile, because it gave me a deeper understanding of the Jewish thought process in regards to Jesus (Yeshua). I’d highly, highly recommend it for that reason alone! And aside from that, it’s a story of God’s faithfulness and mercy–of how he cares so much about us. (I’d also highly recommend these short Jewish testimonies by One For Israel. They often bring tears to my eyes!)

Silent Road to Rescue by Denise Williamson

When the Japanese invade China, Kwei Er and his family flee their burning village and go to live with Uncle Ma Chuang Fu and his wife. But even in the remote town of Nan Kung, the fingers of war can touch them. Kwei Er begins helping his uncle and a missionary, Eric Liddell, as they transport wounded Chinese from the surrounding villages to the Siaochang hospital. The work is dangerous, and every time Kwei Er leads his mule out of town onto the empty road, he wonders if he will live to come home.

This is a simpler read as it’s aimed at a younger audience, but I still really enjoyed it and the book’s message. It’s was encouraging seeing Eric Liddell’s devotion and trust in God throughout the book and God’s faithfulness. Overall this was a really fun and worthwhile read!

“Don’t let fear chase you. That can tire you quickly. Focus on God. Let Him be your strength.”

Silent Road to Rescue

No Surrender (Young Reader’s Edition) by Chris Edmonds

Spanning seven decades and  linking a sprawling cast of heroes from every corner of the country, No Surrender  is an unforgettable story of a father’s extraordinary acts of valor in the treacherous final days of World War II and a son’s journey to discover them.

Like most members of the Greatest Generation, Roddie Edmonds, a humble American soldier from East Tennessee, rarely spoke about his experiences during World War II. Not even his son Chris—who always considered his father a hero—knew the full details of Roddie’s capture at the Battle of the Bulge or his captivity at Stalag IXA, a Nazi POW camp. But when Chris’s daughter was assigned a family history project, Chris reread Roddie’s wartime diaries, which set in motion a series of life-changing events.

I first heard about this story on a Christians United for Israel show when they interviewed the author (the son of a US solider who fought in WWII). And it captured our attention. 😀 My family is in the process of reading it out loud together, and it’s so well written! I’m looking forward to getting further through it and into the heart of the story (which if it’s anything like what I heard in the interview, it will be amazing!). I know it involves an American soldier in a prison camp boldly standing up for his Jewish companions–even at gunpoint. We’re reading the Young Reader’s Edition (which doesn’t really feel like a Young Reader’s Edition and is still 250ish pages), but there is an adult’s edition too.

Cell 58: Imprisoned in Iran by Dan Baumann

“On every continent, in every nation, God is at work in and through the lives of believers. From the streets of Amsterdam to remote Pacific islands to the jungles of Ecuador and beyond, each international adventure that emerges is a dramatic episode that could be directed only by the hand of God.”

Wrongly accused of espionage and thrown into the most infamous high-security prison in Iran, one American man witnessed the powerful triumph of God’s love over fear.

I love stories that bolster your faith! And reading stories such as this do just that. This book is easy to read, interesting, encouraging, and is tastefully done (because as much as I enjoy reading true stories, I really don’t enjoy too many gory details 😉 ). I’m over half-way through and am really enjoying the adventure! 😀 I’m going to be keen to check out more in this collection once I’m done.

Imprisoned with ISIS: Faith in the Face of Evil by Petr Jasek

As a child, Petr Jasek (Peter Yash-eck) watched Soviet tanks roll through the streets of his village in Czechoslovakia, taking the country by force and subjecting it to decades of Communist oppression. Petr grew up in the underground church and benefitted from financial help and Bibles smuggled in to his family. As an adult living in the free Czech Republic, Petr chose to begin serving persecuted Christians—especially in Islamist hotspots in Africa and the Middle East. In 2015, he was arrested in Sudan, convicted as a war criminal, and sentenced to life in prison, where he was forced to share a group cell with ISIS terrorists. The true story of what God did in and through Petr has already inspired tens of thousands around the world. Now, for the first time, Petr tells the whole story.

This book is definitely at the top of my favourites list for the year and perhaps at the very top of my all-time favourites list too!! So in case you’re wondering, you should look into reading this book!!! It’s so, so encouraging and inspiring. It’s amazing to see how God sustained this man in the face of great evil–even when he was imprisoned with antagonistic ISIS cellmates. We serve such an amazing God and this story is a huge reminder of that. The way God orchestrated things and used Petr’s time in prison is so inspiring. This book is such a blessing to read and also tastefully done! 😀

Andddd . . . it’s Day 5 already!! 😀 Thanks for coming back to find out what today’s favourites are. We have such a sweet (and important) genre today–babies! 😉 So many people don’t value these precious lives, but God does and so should we. It’s very important that we to stand up for the voiceless. And on that note, if you come back next week, I’m going to be doing a pro-life post as part of a double pro-life book release tour. So make sure you don’t miss that!

Don’t forget to go find some more books about babies by heading over to the Literary Lodge!!

After so much book fun and excitement, it’s time for some relaxing. I’ve just finished spreading some rugs over the hay in the loft and it smells gorgeous up here! So grab a couple of books and lets take it in turns reading aloud together. It’s going to be such fun (and I brought a few treats to share too, so I hope you’re hungry!). Anyone for a choc chip cookie?!

Five Fall Favourites Day 5: Babies!

Unplanned by Abby Johnson

Abby Johnson quit her job in October 2009. That simple act became a national news story because Abby was the director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas who, after participating in her first actual abortion procedure, walked across the road to join the Coalition for Life. “Unplanned” is a heartstopping personal drama of life-and-death encounters, a courtroom battle, and spiritual transformation that speaks hope and compassion into the political controversy that surrounds this issue. Telling Abby’s story from both sides of the abortion clinic property line, this book is a must-read for anyone who cares about the life versus rights debate and helping women who face crisis pregnancies.

Some of you might have already watched the Unplanned movie (I actually haven’t!), but if you haven’t read the book, I’d highly recommend it! 🙂 It’s such an amazing story and gives a lot of insight into what goes on behind the scenes in a Planned Parenthood clinic. And it’s also a good reminder that everyone life is precious–from the unborn, to the mothers, to the planned parenthood workers . . .

Pearl’s Practise by Perry Elisabeth Kirkpatrick

“When I grow up I want to get married and be a mommy.” As Pearl waits impatiently for her new brother or sister, she learns and practices skills that will help her be a good mother someday.

This is a short read (only about 50 pages) and promotes the Biblical value of being a wife and mother (something that’s so often scorned by today’s society. This would be a good book for young girls to read especially as it encourages them to value their special God-given role!

Seven From Heaven by Bobbi and Kenny McCaughey

Seven from Heaven deals with the important issues that the McCaugheys worked through, including the treatment of infertility, the decision to carry all of the babies to term, the importance of family, church, and community, and the faithfulness of God to provide in the face of limited resources.

I have to admit that it’s been a long time since I read this book. But this story is just sooo amazing. The McCaughey’s are a fantastic example of choosing to value life, even when it’s hard. It’s definitely a miracle-story! 😀

Gift from God by Johanna Compton

Share in the excitement, laughter, and adventures as a family of seven gets ready to become a family of eight. You’ll discover the answers to the following questions: Will it be a boy or a girl, When does life begin, Will God provide donuts for Mum, Is the nosy cashier right, and will the Richards stand up for the truth?

This book is such a lovely picture book written by my sister! It’s not currently up on Goodreads/Amazon. But if you’re interested, let us know. 😉 It’s full of fun photographs and an endearing characters–as well as promoting Biblical truths through the antics of a large family as they eagerly await their new arrival!

I Love You Before You Were Born by Anne Bowen

A loving grandmother eagerly awaits the arrival of her grandchild. She dreams of the baby’s soft sighs, sweet smells, and tiny toes, and imagines the infant smiling, rolling over, and crawling for the first time.

Finally, the baby arrives and Grandma is ready with a very special message: Even before you were born, I was your grandma and I loved you.

With soft but realistic watercolor illustrations and sentimental and lyrical text, I Loved You Before You Were Born perfectly captures a grandmother’s feelings as she anticipates the birth of her grandchild.

This is such a sweet story that my sister showed me just recently when I was on the hunt for books about babies. 😉 It’s full of lovely pictures and while not overtly faith-based, it definitely promotes life from conception.

Don’t forget to enter the giveaway–time is running out!! 😉 It’s open to international entrants as well (though winners outside of the US won’t be able to receive any physical products).

Hope you were able to add some more books to your to-be-read pile! 😀 Let me know which ones you’re interested in reading below! 😀

Welcome back to day 4! I love the category for today–HOPE! As believers we have every reason to be full of hope–no matter what. Because in God, our future is sure.

It’s such a beautiful sunny Autumn day–the sun is shining, the sky is a delightful shade of blue with a few fluffy clouds, and there’s a gorgeous crispness in the air! Days like this just make you glad to be alive!! And they’re also the perfect sort of day to go for a boat ride. So jump in (carefully!), and I’ll row you across to the other side of the lake where a group is gathering to read books in the shade. I only hope the lapping water won’t lull us all to sleep. 😉

There! We made it without getting too wet! Though I’m sorry if I splashed you a little while I was rowing. 😀 Feel free to relax on a picnic rug and enjoy God’s lovely creation, while I share some more great books with you.

Five Fall Favourites Day 4: Hope!

Defying Jihad by Esther Ahmad

Defying Jihad is the true story of a girl growing up under radical Islamic rule, trained to believe her ultimate purpose was to serve Allah by dying as a jihadist. But two nights before she was to leave forever, she had a dream . . . one that would change the course of her destiny.

Against all odds, Esther became a follower of Jesus—even though leaving Islam meant her death sentence. But rather than kill her immediately, Esther’s furious father challenged her to a series of public debates with Muslim scholars: the Bible versus the Quran. If Esther won, she might yet survive. But if the Muslim clerics won, Esther must renounce her Christian faith. For an entire month—if she lived that long—Esther would be brought before the mob daily to defend her newfound faith. Would God give her the words to argue against Muslim leaders, former friends, and even her own family?

Okay, so this one is also on my all-time favourites list! 😀 It is written with the same author as ‘Til We Meet Again that I mentioned in my Day 1 list. And once again I love the writing style! This story is so amazing and is definitely filled with hope–the hope that God cares so much about us, that he would reach down and lovingly reveal Himself to us even while we are walking in darkness and hopelessly lost. You can read my full review here.

I had no fear swelling in me, no panic. The words of my Lord were all I needed. I trusted my faithful God–the One who is true to all his promises.

The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom

At one time Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that there would ever be a story to tell. For the first fifty years of her life nothing at all out of the ordinary had ever happened to her. She was an old-maid watchmaker living contentedly with her spinster sister and their elderly father in the tiny Dutch house over their shop. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. However, with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, a story did ensue.

This book is worth reading at least once, as it is such a good and eye-opening read. In many ways I found it a hard book when I read it (perhaps because I was younger, and it was my first proper glimpse of what happened in the Holocaust). I didn’t “enjoy” reading it then. But I’m so, so glad that I did, because it’s stuck with me ever since in a good way. Parts are blatant, but I think we need to know (to some degree) just how horrible the Holocaust was. This book does a good job of painting an ugly picture without going too far overboard. Even amidst the horrors of the concentration camps, God was faithful to Corrie and Betsie. And God’s faithfulness is the same today as it was then! Which gives us unspeakable HOPE!

You can find another post I did about this book here.

Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a know God.

Through All Things by Malachi Cyr

Loved ones must be rescued.
His brothers depend on him for survival.
The trail behind him is already stained with pain and loss.

Allen is only seventeen, but tragedy and a strong sense of duty already weigh on his shoulders. As the French and Indians wage brutal warfare on the English settlers, Allen embarks on a treacherous journey to free his captive sister and her friend.

With little hope of survival and even less for success, Allen knows he needs God to do the impossible. But if God is able to do all things, why does everything seem to be going wrong?

This is a book that I’d like to re-read sometime. I read it aloud with some of my family, and for me it was one of those books that I wished would keep going a little longer! I came away with a fresh realisation that “through all things” God is indeed faithful. You can see a post I did after reading it here.

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Matthew 19:26

Out of the Depths by Edgar Harrell

The Inspiring Story of a World War II Hero’s Miraculous Survival at Sea

July 30, 1945–The USS “Indianapolis” and its 1,196-man crew is making its way toward a small island in the South Pacific. The ship is sailing unescorted, assured by headquarters the waters are safe. It is midnight, and Marine Edgar Harrell and several others have sacked out on deck rather than spend the night in their hot and muggy quarters below. Fresh off a top-secret mission to deliver uranium for the atomic bombs that would ultimately end World War II, they are unaware their ship is being watched. Minutes later, six torpedoes are slicing toward the “Indy” . . .

For five horrifying days and nights after their ship went down, Harrell and his shipmates had to fend for themselves in the open seas. Plagued by dehydration, exposure, saltwater poisoning, and shark attacks, their numbers were cruelly depleted before they were miraculously rescued. This is one man’s story of courage, ingenuity, and faith in God’s providence in the midst of the worst naval disaster in U.S. history.

This is another amazing story that you won’t forget in a hurry! Truly, Edgar Harrell and his comrades’ only hope in this horrifying situation was God. The horrors of being in the ocean for five days and nights is very real, and it’s encouraging to see how God miraculously saved Edgar’s life. It’s certainly a story worth being told (and read!). I did find parts of it a little hard to get into as it goes into army talk and logistics a bit, but as a whole I enjoyed it.

My Brother’s Keeper by Rod Gragg

Thirty captivating profiles of Christians who risked everything to rescue their Jewish neighbors from Nazi terror during the Holocaust.

My Brother’s Keeper unfolds powerful stories of Christians from across denominations who gave everything they had to save the Jewish people from the evils of the Holocaust. This unlikely group of believers, later honored by the nation of Israel as “The Righteous Among the Nations,” includes ordinary teenage girls, pastors, priests, a German army officer, a former Italian fascist, an international spy, and even a princess.

In one gripping profile after another, these extraordinary historical accounts offer stories of steadfast believers who together helped thousands of Jewish individuals and families to safety. Many of these everyday heroes perished alongside the very people they were trying to protect. There is no doubt that all of their stories showcase the best of humanity — even in the face of unthinkable evil.

This book gives me hope when I see how so many people courageously stood up to do what was right, and how God was with them, using them to save His people. I’ve only read a portion of this book so far, but I look forward to reading the rest! 😀

Five Fall Favourites Day 3: “Picture” Books

Are You Going to Stop? by Catherine MacKenzie

Story of how Gladys Aylward was called by God to go to China as a missionary. As a girl she had always wanted to be taller and to have blonde hair. On arriving in China she realises that the people there all have dark hair and are generally not so tall. Her missionary work is simply described and her escape from the Japanese army, leading many orphan children over the mountains to safety. Told simply for younger children.

This book is part of the Little Lights series of readers for children. I think books like this one are a valuable addition to our bookshelves, because what we read shapes who we become and children are so impressionable! It’s full of lovely illustrations. The message of the book is to trust God and keep going no matter the trials we face–God will make a way.

“Why don’t we cross the river like Moses crossed the Red Sea?” the little boy asked.
“Because I’m not Moses,” Gladys grumbled.
“But God’s still God,” the little boy replied.

Resistance to the Nazis by Jane Shuter

“I did not become a resistance fighter, a smuggler of Jews, and a defier of Nazis all at once. First steps are always small: I began by hiding food under a fence. Now I was smuggling Jews to the Janowka forest.” Irene Gut Opdyke was a teenager when the German army invaded Poland in 1939. She was forced to work in an ammunition factory, and then a laundry for the army. At the same time, she began helping Jews to escape from the Nazis. ‘Resistance to the Nazis’ shows how Irene Gut Opdyke was just one of many ordinary people who found ways to resist Hitler’s armies in Europe, and to save people from the Holocaust. This book explains the different forms of resistance, from the efforts of people to keep their culture alive in the concentration camps, to fighting the German arm by sabotaging supplies and communications.

I love learning about history from books like this one. The format is much more approachable and not as detailed/gory as other more in-depth books about WWII. It’s full of tales of ordinary people who were prepared to risk everything to help others. From revolts in ghettos to people who sacrificed their own lives to help others, this book is full of valuable information as well as photographs. It’s so, so important to learn from the past, lest it repeat itself because of our ignorance. (Warning: there are a couple more graphic photos ie people getting hung and dead bodies.)

God Made Something Amazing (Find The Animal) by Penny Reeve

What is that? A beak and a furry brown tail. Join the animal detectives and find out what it is that is hiding in the Australian bush. He swims in the water and builds tunnels in the ground. The God who made this unusual animal made the whole wide world for us to enjoy and he is even more amazing than anything he has made!

Okay! So we have a book about an Australian animal (might be a little biased here 😛 ) Each book in this collection teaches children about an attribute of God and contains a fun story that gives clues about which animal the book is about alongside Scripture verses. The theme of this one is how amazing God is.

Candy Bomber: The Story of the Berlin Airlift’s “Chocolate Pilot” by Michael O. Tunnell

After World War II the United States and Britain airlifted food and supplies into Russian-blockaded West Berlin. US Air Force Lieutenant Gail S. Halvorsen knew the children of the city were suffering. To lift their spirits, he began dropping chocolate and gum by parachute.

Michael O. Tunnell tells an inspiring tale of candy and courage, illustrated with Lt. Halvorsen’s personal photographs, as well as letters and drawings from the children of Berlin to their beloved “Uncle Wiggly Wings.”

This is a fun book which is just over a 100 pages long. I haven’t read it in its entirety, but it’s such a sweet (pun intended) story about a US pilot showing kindness to the war-affected children of Berlin. It’s a good reminder that on both sides of a war are hurting people.

Mrs. Rosey-Posey and the Empty Nest by Robin Jones Gunn

Young readers will learn that God cares for every living creature in Mrs. Rosey Posey and the Empty Nest. A baby bird falls from its nest, and Mrs. Rosey Posey takes care of it. All the while, she intrigues the children by telling them that someone else saw the baby bird fall. The story and illustrations will pull children into the quest to discover who it is.

I really loved this book when I was younger! It’s a reader, but can easily be used as an ordinary picture book too. The illustrations are sweet and Mrs Rosey-Posey is so kind and grandmotherly. It contains an important message about God caring for us and knowing everything about us, woven into a fun story.

Note: I think this book has been re-released as Mrs Rosey-Posey and the Baby Bird.

What about you? Do you enjoy reading books with pictures or collecting children’s books? 😀

Welcome back to the second day of our Five Fall Favourites party!!!

I’ve just finished picking some bushels of crisp red apples, so be sure to grab some before you settle down with your new books to read. Now all I have to do is decide whether to make an apple sponge or an apple crumble with the leftovers. 😉 Any suggestions?!

Today I have the privilege of sharing with you five books that are suitable for family read-alouds! I have such fun memories of reading books with various family members. And even though we’re all older now, we still enjoy grabbing a book and reading it together.

Five Fall Favourites Day 2: Family!

Alone, Yet Not Alone by Tracy Leininger Craven

A miraculous survival. An extraordinary faith. Autumn 1755. Settled in the Blue Mountains of Pennsylvania, deep within America’s new frontier, the Leininger family celebrates the blessings of a beautiful homestead and bountiful harvest. Until tragedy strikes with the beginning of the French-Indian War, and the devastating raid known as the Penn’s Creek Massacre.
The lives of this simple, God-fearing family are forever altered when Barbara and Regina, two young sisters, are carried away by a band of Allegheny warriors. Driven by their faith in God and the powerful bonds of family, Barbara and Regina hold firmly to the belief that they are never alone, even in their darkest hour, and that they will be reunited again.

No one expresses Barbara’s apprehensions better than her own words, written in 1759: “If one could not believe that there is a God, who helps and saves from death, one had better let running away alone…The extreme probability that the Indians would pursue and recapture us, was two to one compared with the dim hope that, perhaps, we would get through…even if we did escape the Indians, how would we ever succeed in passing through the wilderness, unacquainted with a single path or trail…”

This one is on my all-time-favourites book list! The book is written for a younger audience (and is more simplistic in style), but the story is nothing short of miraculous. God’s hand of protection was definitely on these two sisters. If you like true stories about Indians and settlers that also include God’s amazing provision, then be sure to check this out!

The song “Alone, Yet Not Alone” which was written for the movie is also a favourite of mine. I enjoy playing it on piano while my sisters sing. 🙂

“Each of you will have times of testing in your life. But you must always remember — no matter how difficult the trial or how dense the wilderness — God will never leave you. If your hearts remain true, God promises endless blessings.”

Alone Yet Not Alone, by Tracey Leininger Craven

Sir Malcolm and the Missing Prince–A Tale of Long Ago by Sidney Baldwin

Young Prince Hubert is incorrigible, unmanageable, and tiresomely demanding. What is the good King to do? How will his selfish Prince ever learn to rule the kingdom well? His most trusted friend, Sir Malcolm, has a plan. Prince Hubert is swept away to a land where he is simply known as Hugh, a peasant boy. His silks are replaced with rough work clothes, his castle dwelling with a humble cottage. It is here that Hugh learns valuable life lessons from the widow of the forest.

I own several books from the Lamplighter Collection! Their covers are beautifully designed with embossing and expensive cover materials–so they make such a lovely addition to your bookshelf! I have to admit though, that I’ve mainly listened to the Lamplighter audio dramas (which I highly recommend!!). They always have such important lessons to learn and are so professionally done–my whole family loves them. 😀 Anyway, this book flows well and is easy to read, making it a fun tale with important lessons to learn along the way.

Children of the Storm by Natasha Vins

Young, school-age Natasha receives pressure from her teachers to give her unquestioning allegiance to the Soviet State. Anti-Christian sentiment dogs her family’s life as well. The Vins family faces imprisonment, humiliation, court trials, and loss of jobs as part of the persecution waged by their government. In her teen years, Natasha begins to see that doors close to those who remain faithful to Christ. Now she must count the cost and decide for herself whether she wants to pay the price. The autobiography of Natasha Vins.

I found this quite an eye-opening book as I’m not all that familiar with Soviet Russia. The writing itself was simplistic, but the content is well worth reading. Books like this make us ask ourselves what we would be willing to stand up for if we were faced with such pressure and persecution. Natasha herself was not immune to struggles and questions, so her journey is “real.” And the truth remains–under persecution God’s people flourish and grow. God’s Word will not be silenced!

Footprints in the Barn by Stephen and Susan Castleberry

Who is the man in the green car? What is going on in the hayloft? Is there something wrong with the mailbox? And what’s for lunch? The answers to these and many other interesting questions are found in the book Footprints in the Barn.

This series is more a family favourite as I have mainly heard snippets when they’re being read aloud. 😀 I’m pretty sure I would’ve loved these books if we had owned them when I was younger though! If you’re not familiar with The Farm Mystery Series, they are about the adventures of two young brothers who form their own detective agency (and what children wouldn’t love to to that!) and solve everyday mysteries that crop up around the house. They are full of good lessons as the boys’ family strives to live for God.

“Grandma’s Attic Series” by Arleta Richardson

Remember when you were a child—when all the world was new, and the smallest object a thing of wonder? Arleta Richardson remembers: the funny wearable wire contraption hidden in the dusty attic, the century-old schoolchild’s slate that belonged to Grandma, an ancient trunk filled with quilt pieces—each with its own special story—and the button basket, a miracle of mysteries. And best of all was the remarkable grandmother who made magic of all she touched, bringing the past alive as only a born storyteller could.

These books are probably familiar to most, but if you haven’t read one, then take a moment to settle down and be transported back in time. And get ready to have a good laugh! I have fun memories of my dad reading these aloud to me and my sisters when we were little. 🙂 Even though Mabel and Sarah Jane certainly got mixed up in a lot of mischief, there are important lessons to be learned too. 😉
