I hope you got the chance to read my pro-life post last week, because today I have the privilege of sharing about a pro-life book by Erika Matthews. 😀 Plus we did a fun interview together, and there’s also a giveaway for you to enter! 😀 So I hope you’re getting excited–because I am! 😉
First up, here’s the beautiful cover of Erika’s new book, Sustainer’s Smile and all the details you’ll be interested to know!
Title: Sustainer’s Smile
Series: Book #4 of Truth from Taerna (can be read as a standalone)
Author: Erika Matthews
Page Count: 251 pages
Release Date: October 21, 2021
Suffering suffocates her soul.
How can she ever smile again?
A helpless newborn…that’s exactly how twenty-four-year-old Liliora Ellith feels in her efforts to speak up on behalf of the youngest members of Taerna’s pleasure-driven society. Her tender heart for the defenseless and deep aversion to conflict throw Liliora’s soul into turmoil when tragedy opens her eyes to the quiet yet heartrending war on Taerna’s babies—both born and unborn. Adon Olam’s Word coupled with a secret in her own past fuel her determination. All she wants is to make peace with her past and discover her future among the cradles of unwanted babies. However, the challenges ahead of her threaten to send her spiraling into hopeless depression time and again. Saving innocent lives from the crush of the destroyer and raising a generation in the ways of Adon Olam seem more impossible than ever. At the very end of herself, will the sufferings of her and her babies prove to be anything less than the catalyst for complete disaster?
Genre: clean kingdom adventure fiction, recommended for fourteen and up due to addressing the topic of abortion
Content: no magic, romance, or language. Abortion is mentioned or thought about by characters but happens entirely off-page. There are a few unwed mothers but it isn’t condoned.
And now for the fun interview I mentioned! 😀
Author Interview with Erika Matthews
Welcome to my blog, Erika! I’m so glad that you agreed to do an author interview with me! 😀 I always love finding out more about author’s lives and writing. So let’s dive in!
Have you always enjoyed writing? If not, what made you get started?
I started writing stories and poems when I was five years old, and I never stopped, so I must have always enjoyed it. Writing followed reading quickly for me. I have continued and increased my writing due to God’s call on my life, which I’ve known since I was thirteen. My desire is to encourage people into a more intimate relationship with God.
Sounds like you’ve always been a writer at heart then! 😉 What is your favourite genre to read?
I especially enjoy reading Christian vintage fiction: those historical fiction novels that were contemporary when they were written but old now. Those writers who wrote about times foreign to us today were immersed in that culture and as a result produce flavorful, charming, and edifying books.
It’s fun to think that such books were once contemporary to their time period! 🙂 Now on a more serious note: What do you hope readers will draw from Sustainer’s Smile?
Sustainer’s Smile was written as my own heart-cry to God for those who are too small and defenseless to speak up for themselves. Through telling Liliora’s story, I yearn to bring to the forefront of the mind the horrors of treating the unborn as valueless and kindle the desire to pray fervently for them. I pray that through this book, you as a reader might find God’s hand in whatever struggles you are facing. My prayer is that you as a reader discover that He is indeed carrying you. Even when your trials seem pointless and purposeless, too intense to accept or move past, may He prove to be your sustainer, and may He grant that you too find the smile in the storm.
It’s so lovely to hear what your heart behind the writing of this book is. And I agree that we all need to keep these little lives in our thoughts more (and pray for them!).
I’m curious! Do you have a favourite non-book related hobby?
I love doing anything outdoors! Hiking, swimming, and enjoying nature (the beach, mountains, views, landscapes, autumn trees, summer warmth, spring breezes, sunrises, sunsets) are a few of my favourite outdoor activities.
That’s so beautifully put! I love being out in God’s creation myself and all those things sound delightful! Now I want to find out a bit more about your series! How many books are you planning for it?
Truth from Taerna is a six-book series born from a heart to communicate the truths of God’s kingdom—the spiritual realm hidden from our physical senses—in an engaging story format. Each book can be read as a standalone, and each one focuses on an aspect of spiritual truth that today’s church often downplays. My desire is to demonstrate how the powerful, life-changing truths of God’s kingdom could play out in a fictional setting.
I plan to release the final two books in the series (Memory’s Mind and Romance’s Rest) in 2022. I also have a short story collection in the works (newsletter subscribers will receive it free as soon as it’s available – restinglife.com/signup) and ideas for a companion novella bouncing around in my head…
Wow! A six book series will be quite the achievement! 😀 And I love the covers by the way. They look so lovely together, and I can’t way to see the next two. I think Sustainer’s Smile is my favourite so far–I love the green colour and the way the trees frame the mother and baby!
Talking about favourites, what is a favourite character or book that you’ve written so far?
“Favourite” is a subjective word. 🙂 Promise’s Prayer was my first novel; Victory’s Voice is the one I get most excited about when I reread it – but Sustainer’s Smile is probably the book that is nearest to my heart. What’s more, I enjoyed writing Liliora Ellith. She is very similar to me in many ways. She processes hurt similarly; she has a heart similar to mine, and while there are many differences, she’s a very relatable character.
I knew that would likely be tricky question, but I like how you answered it! 😉 I think an author’s first novel will always hold a special place in their heart, and it’s interesting hearing why the other’s have special places too.
To finish off, do you have a Scripture verse that was special to you while writing Sustainer’s Smile?
Yes. The theme verse for Sustainer’s Smile is Proverbs 31:8-9: “Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.”
I also love Isaiah 46:3-4 for this book: “Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb: And even to your old age I am He; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.”
Thank you so much for all you’ve shared! It’s been such a pleasure to have you on my blog today. 😀 And a big congratulations on your newest release! Keep writing to honour God!
