The Blessing of a Diary!

As we begin 2019, I want to take a moment to encourage you to consider writing in a diary this year! I began writing in a diary many years ago (though I have to admit there have been extended periods where I’ve only written very sporadically!). 😀 What largely inspired me to start keeping a diary was a book series I was reading at the time. In it the main character repeatedly wrote in her diary, and it really inspired me to do the same.

There’s so many things that you can include in a diary:

  • a prayer
  • a favourite Scripture
  • details about yourself (your favourite colour, height, what scares you etc.)
  • the book you’re currently reading and a short thought about it
  • song lyrics that really touched or inspired you recently
  • what you had for dinner
  • a struggle
  • the beautiful rainbow you just saw and how it made you feel
  • what you did that day
  • what God has been teaching you
  • a favourite recipe
  • a quote that touched you
  • your hopes and plans
  • a current event and your perspective on it

Really you can write absolutely anything!! It’s so refreshing, and it doesn’t have to take very long at all! A couple of years ago, my sisters and I had a “diary competition” going of who could write at least one sentence every day for the longest. We went for well over a year, and I can’t even remember who won 😉 The prize really was learning to be consistent! What a gift we received by having recorded faithfully something from each day for so long a period of time! I’m not sure how many completed diaries I have so far but at a guess it must be at least half a dozen. 🙂

Sadly, over the last year or so, I have to admit that I’ve gotten pretty slack–and I miss it.

There’s just something about writing your thoughts out as words on a page–things make much more sense when there not just a jumble in your mind! And reading through previous entries can be so enjoyable and encouraging. I know I definitely get distracted reading mine sometimes! 🙂 It’s so helpful to be able to see how things in your life have changed, and sometimes reading about some trial or thought you had months ago can be just what you need now.

It’s so easy to lose perspective on things as you go through life. Your entries can serve as a reminder of God’s faithfulness to you. How easy it is to forget all the “little” blessings.

So I’m trying to make it more of a habit again to write in the diary that lives beneath my bed! 😀

Given my appreciation for writing in a diary and how influenced I was by a diary-writing character so many years ago, it’s no wonder that the main character in my book keeps a diary too! Here’s an excerpt for you:

Later that night, when her sisters slept, Jayne pulled out her diary, longing to turn her mass of thoughts into words on a page. For a long time she sat deep in thought, pondering over the day’s events, diary in hand. It seemed like a week since she had sent Yvonne on her way with the cough mixture. As she began to write, her thoughts came faster than her pen could move. Somewhere along the way, they turned into a prayer. When her pen stopped moving, her eyes felt drawn to the shelf above the fire, and her gaze fell on the plaque Daddy had made for Mam. She went over to it and traced the words with her finger.

CHRIST IS THE HEAD
of this house,
THE UNSEEN GUEST
at every meal,
THE SILENT LISTENER
to every conversation.

She went back to her diary and copied the words on the page. Christ was indeed present. After the ink dried, she laid her hand across the page as if to grasp the words.

I also wanted to let any musicians out there know that I now have two hymn arrangements available on SheetMusicPlus.com 😀 😀 😀 So that is pretty exciting! I never thought I’d be saying that! One is for harp and one is for piano. They both happen to be of the same song, but they are very different to each other. 😉 If you’d like to check them out, you can find them here. And hopefully I’ll be able to have more up over the next few months! 😀

Hope you have a blessed week!

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18

You’re welcome! 😀 Yeah, it doesn’t take long for the habit to slip and before you know it the last date in the diary is from months ago! But I’m determined to do it more regularly again. 😉

Thanks for the encouragement and inspiration. I have tried several times, but never with much success. I may try it again this year and see.
Congratulations on your arrangements!!! I know what an accomplishment that is. I hope you will be able to continually advance in 2019.

Thanks, Emily! Arranging can be so rewarding and challenging all in one! 😀

Oh yes! You should try again! It is so worth it! 😉 Even just a few sentences a couple times of week is better than none at all! I think it is kind of relaxing!
